Situ\u00e9 dans la partie sud-ouest de la ville, l&#8217;arrondissement est s\u00e9par\u00e9 du New Jersey par l&#8217;Arthur Kill et le Kill Van Kull et du reste de New York par la baie de New York. Avec une population de 495 747 habitants au recensement de 2020, Staten Island est l&#8217;arrondissement le moins peupl\u00e9 mais le troisi\u00e8me en superficie avec 152 km\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>Foyer du peuple indig\u00e8ne Lenape, l&#8217;\u00eele a \u00e9t\u00e9 colonis\u00e9e par des colons hollandais au 17\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. C&#8217;\u00e9tait l&#8217;un des 12 comt\u00e9s originaux de l&#8217;\u00c9tat de New York. Staten Island a \u00e9t\u00e9 consolid\u00e9e avec New York en 1898. Elle \u00e9tait officiellement connue sous le nom d&#8217;arrondissement de Richmond jusqu&#8217;en 1975, date \u00e0 laquelle son nom a \u00e9t\u00e9 chang\u00e9 en arrondissement de Staten Island. Elle contient le quartier historique d\u00e9sign\u00e9 de St. George et le quartier historique de St. Paul&#8217;s Avenue-Stapleton Heights, qui comportent de grandes maisons victoriennes. La <em>East Shore<\/em> abrite le FDR Boardwalk de 4 kilom\u00e8tres, la quatri\u00e8me promenade la plus longue du monde. La <em>South Shore<\/em>, site de la colonie huguenote hollandaise et fran\u00e7aise du XVIIe si\u00e8cle, s&#8217;est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e rapidement \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1960 et 1970 et est maintenant principalement suburbaine. La <em>West Shore<\/em> est la partie la moins peupl\u00e9e et la plus industrielle de l&#8217;\u00eele.<\/p>\n<p>Le trafic automobile peut atteindre l&#8217;arrondissement depuis Brooklyn par le pont Verrazzano-Narrows et depuis le New Jersey par Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge et Bayonne Bridge. Staten Island poss\u00e8de des lignes de bus de la Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) et une ligne de transport en commun rapide MTA, le Staten Island Railway, qui relie le terminal de ferry de St. George \u00e0 Tottenville. Staten Island est le seul arrondissement non connect\u00e9 au syst\u00e8me de m\u00e9tro de la ville de New York. Le ferry gratuit de Staten Island relie l&#8217;arrondissement \u00e0 Manhattan en passant par le port de New York.
