La capitale r\u00e9gionale \u00e9tait Hinda. Les principales villes et villages sont Madingo-Kayes et Mvouti. Depuis 2002, la ville de Loango est la capitale de la r\u00e9gion du Kouilou. Le d\u00e9partement est limitrophe du d\u00e9partement du Niari et \u00e0 l&#8217;international avec le Gabon et la r\u00e9gion du Cabinda, qui appartient \u00e0 l&#8217;Angola.<\/p>\n<p>Le d\u00e9partement du Kouilou se compose de deux ensembles de reliefs : la plaine c\u00f4ti\u00e8re, compos\u00e9e essentiellement de la savane, et une cha\u00eene de montagne, essentiellement foresti\u00e8re, le Mayombe.<\/p>\n<p>Quatre fleuves se jettent dans l&#8217;oc\u00e9an Atlantique, la Conkouati, la Noumbi, le Kouilou et la Lo\u00e9m\u00e9. Le Kouilou s&#8217;appelle Niari hors de sa r\u00e9gion \u00e9ponyme. Il est le deuxi\u00e8me fleuve congolais par son d\u00e9bit.
