Natitingou est la capitale d\u00e9partementale ; d&#8217;autres agglom\u00e9rations majeures comprennent Boukoumb\u00e9, Birni, Firou, Kouand\u00e9, P\u00e9hunco, Porga, Tangui\u00e9ta et Toucountouna. Le d\u00e9partement d&#8217;Atacora a \u00e9t\u00e9 divis\u00e9 en 1999, avec son territoire sud supprim\u00e9 pour former le d\u00e9partement de Donga nouvellement cr\u00e9\u00e9. Le terrain est principalement constitu\u00e9 de montagnes bois\u00e9es, d&#8217;o\u00f9 proviennent deux affluents du fleuve Niger &#8211; la rivi\u00e8re M\u00e9krou et la rivi\u00e8re Pendjari. Une partie de la cha\u00eene de montagnes de l&#8217;Atacora est situ\u00e9e dans la r\u00e9gion et s&#8217;\u00e9tend jusqu&#8217;au nord-est du Togo. La cha\u00eene de montagnes est caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par de nombreuses zones de dambo (zones humides peu profondes) et de mar\u00e9cages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourisme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Avec la cha\u00eene de l&#8217;Atacora, c&#8217;est la r\u00e9gion la plus montagneuse du pays et la plus s\u00e8che. On y trouve plusieurs destinations touristiques majeures, le mus\u00e9e r\u00e9gional de Natitingou, les tatas somba, le parc national de la Pendjari et de nombreuses chutes d&#8217;eau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D\u00e9mographie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En 2013, la population totale du d\u00e9partement \u00e9tait de 772\u00a0262, avec 380\u00a0448 hommes et 391\u00a0814 femmes. La proportion de femmes \u00e9tait de 50,70 %. La population rurale totale \u00e9tait de 62,80 %, tandis que la population urbaine \u00e9tait de 37,20 %. La population active totale du d\u00e9partement \u00e9tait de 170 333 personnes, dont 27,20 % de femmes.
