Il correspond approximativement \u00e0 la haute vall\u00e9e du Rh\u00f4ne, dans les Alpes, qui s&#8217;\u00e9tend du glacier du Rh\u00f4ne jusqu&#8217;au L\u00e9man. Le Rh\u00f4ne prend sa source au pied du col de la Furka (2 429 m\u00e8tres), dans un affaissement en forme de fourche, entre le Blauberg et le Furkahorn, \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re des cantons d\u2019Uri et du Valais. Le Rh\u00f4ne coule d&#8217;abord approximativement d&#8217;est en ouest jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 Martigny. \u00c0 ce niveau, son cours se d\u00e9tourne de fa\u00e7on brutale vers le nord en formant un coude. Il se jette dans le L\u00e9man apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 un d\u00e9fil\u00e9 \u00e9troit \u00e0 Saint-Maurice. Il est limit\u00e9 au nord par le L\u00e9man, le canton de Vaud et le canton de Berne, \u00e0 l\u2019est par les cantons d\u2019Uri et du Tessin. Au sud, il partage ses fronti\u00e8res avec l\u2019Italie (la Vall\u00e9e d&#8217;Aoste et le Pi\u00e9mont) et \u00e0 l\u2019ouest avec la France (Haute-Savoie). Le centre de gravit\u00e9 du Valais selon l&#8217;Office f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de topographie, se trouve aux mayens de Gillou \u00e0 1 870 m\u00e8tres d&#8217;altitude, au-dessus de Saint-Luc, dont les coordonn\u00e9es Swiss Grid (syst\u00e8me suisse de coordonn\u00e9es) sont : E 612.813\/N 117.582.<\/p>\n<p>Le canton du Valais culmine \u00e0 la pointe Dufour, \u00e0 4 634 m d&#8217;altitude, ce qui repr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement le point culminant de la Suisse, et son point le plus bas se trouve au bord du L\u00e9man sur les territoires des communes de Saint-Gingolph et Port-Valais, \u00e0 372 m d&#8217;altitude. Les h\u00f4teliers furent \u00e0 la base de l&#8217;essor du tourisme valaisan\u00a0; beaucoup d&#8217;entre eux, tel C\u00e9sar Ritz, ont consacr\u00e9 temps et argent pour satisfaire une client\u00e8le provenant du monde entier. Le canton poss\u00e8de plus de 120 destinations d&#8217;hiver et d&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;industrie est tr\u00e8s diversifi\u00e9e, elle va des profils en aluminium \u00e0 la fabrication de mouvements m\u00e9caniques pour l&#8217;industrie horlog\u00e8re, des moules de haute pr\u00e9cision aux produits pharmaceutiques et de beaut\u00e9, des composants \u00e9lectroniques aux mati\u00e8res plastiques, de la microtechnique aux biotechnologies, en passant par les pierres synth\u00e9tiques (Hrand Djevahirdhjian \u00e0 Monthey).<\/p>\n<p>Les petites et moyennes entreprises sont bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans la plupart des r\u00e9gions du canton, elles assurent une production de haut niveau dans les domaines les plus divers. 90 % des entreprises valaisannes occupent moins de 100 personnes. Parmi d&#8217;autres banques, la banque cantonale du Valais assure le d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique de la r\u00e9gion.<\/p>\n<p>Le Valais est \u00e9galement un tr\u00e8s grand exportateur d&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 : de nombreux barrages (plus de 13), en particulier celui de la Grande-Dixence, sur la commune d&#8217;H\u00e9r\u00e9mence, fournissent une grande quantit\u00e9 d&#8217;\u00e9nergie hydro\u00e9lectrique.<\/p>\n<p>Le Bas-Valais poss\u00e8de \u00e9galement une raffinerie, \u00e0 Collombey, reli\u00e9e par un ol\u00e9oduc au port de G\u00eanes en Italie.<\/p>\n<p>Un gazoduc, appel\u00e9 gazoduc du Rh\u00f4ne et appartenant \u00e0 la compagnie Swissgaz, relie Obergesteln \u00e0 Bex.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;agriculture, qui fut longtemps la principale activit\u00e9 du canton, a perdu de son importance, elle a longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 la base de l&#8217;\u00e9conomie. Mais depuis la fin du xixe si\u00e8cle, l&#8217;agriculture et l&#8217;\u00e9levage ont progressivement d\u00e9clin\u00e9, c\u00e9dant la place \u00e0 l&#8217;industrie. Les grandes cultures (c\u00e9r\u00e9ales, ma\u00efs, colza, betterave et tabac) se concentrent essentiellement dans le Bas-Valais et dans certaines zones de montagne (pour le seigle notamment). Depuis peu, une nouvelle culture, le soja, a fait son apparition dans quelques exploitations et permet ainsi de diversifier la production. On cultive aussi des plantes aromatiques et m\u00e9dicinales.<\/p>\n<p>Les cultures mara\u00eech\u00e8res (abricots, pommes et poires) restent renomm\u00e9es. On tire une eau-de-vie des abricots (l&#8217;abricotine) et de la poire Williams (Williamine).<\/p>\n<p>La culture de la vigne est demeur\u00e9e importante. Parmi les communes valaisannes, 59 se trouvent dans la partie francophone du canton.<\/p>\n<p>Sion est le chef-lieu du canton ainsi que le si\u00e8ge du Grand conseil, du Conseil d&#8217;\u00c9tat et du Tribunal cantonal du canton du Valais. Six communes valaisannes ont le statut de ville : Sion (34 978 habitants), Martigny (20 276), Monthey (17 820), Sierre (16 819), Brigue-Glis (13 221), Vi\u00e8ge (8 060) et Zermatt (5 820). Le Valais compte \u00e9galement cinq agglom\u00e9rations statistiques : Brigue-Vi\u00e8ge (48 446 habitants), Martigny (23 520), Monthey (34 147), Sierre (26 572) et Sion (88 769).<\/p>\n<div
