Au nord, le canton est limit\u00e9 par le lac des Quatre-Cantons. Dans les autres directions, il est limit\u00e9 par des cha\u00eenes de montagnes. Les cantons voisins sont : au nord le canton de Lucerne et de Schwytz, \u00e0 l&#8217;est le canton d&#8217;Uri, au sud les cantons d&#8217;Obwald (Engelberg) et Berne et enfin \u00e0 l&#8217;ouest le canton d&#8217;Obwald. L&#8217;Engelberger forme la vall\u00e9e principale du canton et se jette dans le lac des Quatre-Cantons. Les deux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la vall\u00e9e sont bord\u00e9s par des massifs montagneux tels que le Stanserhorn ou le Buochserhorn.<\/p>\n<p>Nidwald culmine au Rotst\u00f6ckli, \u00e0 2 901 m d&#8217;altitude, et son point le plus bas se trouve au bord du lac des Quatre-Cantons, \u00e0 434 m d&#8217;altitude7. Avec 275,9 km\u00b2, Nidwald est le cinqui\u00e8me plus petit canton suisse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c9conomie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jusqu&#8217;au 20<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Nidwald \u00e9tait domin\u00e9e par l&#8217;agriculture. Le b\u00e9tail et le fromage \u00e9taient principalement export\u00e9s vers le nord de l&#8217;Italie. N\u00e9anmoins, jusqu&#8217;au milieu du XX<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, l&#8217;agriculture dominait le canton. Aujourd&#8217;hui, un grand nombre de petites et moyennes entreprises dominent l&#8217;\u00e9conomie. Le plus gros employeur est le constructeur d&#8217;avions Pilatus. Les petites et moyennes entreprises travaillent dans un large \u00e9ventail de domaines. Beaucoup se sp\u00e9cialisent dans la construction de machines, l&#8217;\u00e9quipement m\u00e9dical, le commerce international, l&#8217;optique et l&#8217;\u00e9lectronique.<\/p>\n<p>Les domaines traditionnels tels que la foresterie et l&#8217;agriculture sont toujours importants. L&#8217;agriculture est sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e dans l&#8217;\u00e9levage bovin et laitier. Les fermes sont toujours g\u00e9r\u00e9es par des familles individuelles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourisme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En raison de sa g\u00e9ographie montagneuse, le tourisme est important \u00e0 Nidwald. Le lac et les montagnes attirent de nombreux touristes, aussi bien en hiver qu&#8217;en \u00e9t\u00e9. Les principales stations baln\u00e9aires comprennent Klewenalp, Stanserhorn (montagne), la r\u00e9gion autour de Bannalp et B\u00fcrgenstock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Communes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En 2008, le canton de Nidwald compte 11 communes ; contrairement \u00e0 d&#8217;autres cantons, ces communes ne font partie d&#8217;aucun district.
