La majorit\u00e9 des habitants de l&#8217;\u00eele travaillent dans les plantations de noix de coco et dans la production de coprah. La principale base a\u00e9rienne de l&#8217;\u00eele se trouve du c\u00f4t\u00e9 nord-est de l&#8217;\u00eele. Des essais nucl\u00e9aires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9s sur l&#8217;\u00eele de Kiritimati par les Britanniques en 1957 et 1958 et par les \u00c9tats-Unis en 1962.
