Il doit son nom au massif volcanique du Cantal qui occupe le centre de son territoire. L&#8217;Insee et la Poste lui attribuent le code 15. Sa pr\u00e9fecture est Aurillac. Il correspond approximativement \u00e0 la Haute-Auvergne, partition territoriale utilis\u00e9e par les historiens dont les limites varient selon les auteurs. Lequel soutient \u00e0 son tour une industrie laiti\u00e8re responsable du beurre et du Roquefort et des fromages d&#8217;appellation contr\u00f4l\u00e9e Cantal, Salers et Bleu d&#8217;Auvergne. Avant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, les principales exportations \u00e9taient le b\u00e9tail, le fromage, le beurre et le charbon et les principales importations \u00e9taient le charbon, le vin, les c\u00e9r\u00e9ales, la farine et la poterie. \u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, il \u00e9tait reli\u00e9 aux chemins de fer d&#8217;Orl\u00e9ans et du Midi.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionnellement, de nombreux Cantaliens parcouraient la France au cours de l&#8217;ann\u00e9e pour exercer des m\u00e9tiers modestes, mais maintenant le manque relatif d&#8217;industrie et de d\u00e9veloppement de la r\u00e9gion permet le tourisme.
