Ice breaking up in Hudson Bay, Canada
Long slivery-black lines zip across the pearly ice that covers the Hudson Bay in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS ) image, acquired by the Aqua satellite on March 13, 2004. It is spring, and the first signs of thaw are beginning to be visible in Canada. Black water hugs the shores of the Bay where the ice has already receded. The winter-brown land of Ontario, left, and Quebec, right, is also covered with snow, the rivers mirroring the dark lines formed by cracks in the ice on the Hudson Bay.
