Physiographically, the Caribbean region is primarily a chain of islands that surround the Caribbean Sea. To the north, the region borders the Gulf of Mexico, the Strait of Florida and the North Atlantic Ocean, which is to the east and northeast. To the south is the coast of the continent of South America.
