In turn, it is one of the 24 self-governing states or jurisdictions of the first order that make up the country, and one of the 24 national legislative electoral districts. Its capital and most populated city is the homonymous city of Santiago del Estero. It is located in the north of the country, in the Norte Grande Argentino region, bordering Salta and Chaco to the north, Chaco and Santa Fe to the east, Córdoba to the south and Catamarca and Tucumán to the west. The province has a population of 896,461 inhabitants, distributed over an area of 136 351 km².
