Physical map of the Province of Chaco, Argentina.
The territory of this province is intact in the Chaco sector called Chaco Austral; It has a flat and alluvial relief, with a very slight inclination from northwest to southeast. This characteristic is evident in the direction of the often vagrant river courses. The soils are mostly clayey, which, added to the scarce slope, makes it difficult to drain water and forms numerous marshes, estuaries and semi-permanent lagoons.
The south of the province presents the areas with the greatest risk of flooding, in which only extensive livestock farming is practiced and it is the area with the lowest productive potential.
In the north and west, the forest called "El Impenetrable" occupies almost the entire territory; its lands constitute one of the last areas still outside the agricultural frontier.
On the stretches of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers are numerous islands, among which stands out the Island of Cerrito, headquarters of war episodes in the War of the Triple Alliance and one of the main tourist spots. Also some sandbanks are formed off the coast of Corrientes, which are very sought after by river lovers.
