The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia, Turkey (both Asian and European), and Egypt (which is mostly in North Africa), it is approximately equivalent to the southwest of Asia, reason why it is often confused with the expression Near East or Western Asia.
This area is home to several cultural and ethnic groups, including Persian, Turkish, Arab, Kurdish and Jewish culture. The three main language groups are Iranian, Turkish and Semitic (including Arabic, Amharic and Hebrew). The definition of the Middle East, both established in reference books and commonly used, defines the region as "the nations of Southwest Asia, from Iran to Egypt". As a result, Egypt, with its Sinai Peninsula in Asia, is usually considered part of the Middle East. Map 2008.
