Middle East Desert Locusts
Middle East Desert Locusts.
Desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) is a species of cedar orthoptera whose pests have threatened agricultural production in Africa, the Middle East and Asia for centuries. The quality of life of at least one tenth of the world population is affected by this insect pest.
This species is potentially the most dangerous of the pests caused by species of the genus Schistocerca, due to its ability to swarm and fly quickly and migrate over long distances. It has two to five generations per year. The northern heights of Ethiopia (Tigray) and Eritrea slow down the movements of the species around the breeding areas on the Red Sea coast. The potential pest originates in East Africa, and can be prevented if it is acted on before hatching in Eritrea and Sudan (Jahn 1993). The 2004 pest caused significant losses in crop crops in West Africa and a negative impact on food security in the region. Although the species itself is not responsible for famine, it contributes significantly. Map 1973.
