Belo Horizonte is the sixth largest city in Brazil, the thirteenth in South America and the eighteenth in America. The metropolis is anchored in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, classified as the third most populated metropolitan area in Brazil and the seventeenth most populated in the Americas. Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, the second most populated state in Brazil. It is the first modern city planned in Brazil.
