In 2002 there were about 160 neighborhoods in Belo Horizonte. According to the 1991 census, the most populous neighborhoods of the mining capital were: Jatobá, located in the Barreiro region, with 29,576 inhabitants; the São Gabriel, in the Northeast, with 27 980 inhabitants; Padre Eustáquio, Northwest, with 27 980 inhabitants; the Santa Efigênia, East, with 27 141 inhabitants; and the Vila Cafezal, Center-South, with 26,120 inhabitants.
