Map of Brussels, a municipality in Belgium with 183,287 inhabitants, capital of Belgium, seat of the French Community and the Flemish Community, as well as seat of several institutions of the European Union. The town bears the honorary title of town. It is located in the center of the Brussels-Capital Region and is surrounded by other municipalities which together constitute this region of 19 municipalities with a population of 1,211,026 on 1 January 2020 and endowed with the supra-municipal authority of a government and a parliament. Outside extends the outskirts of Brussels overflowing into the Flemish Region in which the Brussels region is landlocked to form the Brussels agglomeration.
The municipality of Brussels proper is made up of several territories: first the Pentagon which delimits the historic centre, then the former municipalities of Laeken, Haren and Neder-Over-Heembeek, and finally the parts of annexed neighboring municipalities which are the district North-East with the modernist extension of the northern district and its tower blocks, the "European district" (informal part of the Léopold district) and the district of Avenue Louise as well as the Bois de la Cambre and part of the Sonian Forest.
The city of Brussels extends over 32.61 km² and has 185,053 inhabitants on 1 September 2019, 94,863 men and 90,190 women, i.e. a density of 5,510.21 inhabitants/km².
